Capturing Summer: An Evening at Rainbow Cone in Chicago

Last night, nostalgia took us down to Rainbow Cone in Beverly, a place that holds fond memories for my husband Jim. As we drove down the familiar street of Western on the south side of Chicago, we found ourselves at a local treasureβ€”Rainbow Cone. This iconic Chicago spot is famous for its delightful layered ice cream cones, and it's a place that sparks joy in anyone who visits, especially families from Chicago and surrounding suburbs.

I hadn’t planned on turning our casual outing into a photo session. We certainly weren’t dressed for it and my trusty DSLR was resting at home, far from the golden light of the setting sun that gorgeously transformed our Rainbow Cone. But as the evening light draped everything in its warm glow, I was transported back 14 yearsβ€”to the days when every golden hour was a new opportunity to capture the beauty in my camera. That excitement, that thrill of catching the perfect light, hasn't faded over the years.

Standing there, with only my iPhone 14 in hand, I was reminded of a simple truth: the best camera is indeed the one you have with you. It’s not about having the fanciest gear or the most extensive training; it’s about capturing the moments that feel special, that tell a story, that bring us joy to your family. So, I started shooting anyway and let the simplicity of the moment guide the shoot. Let me tell you it is hard to photograph with ice cream in hand too - but I made do.

The photos from last night are not just images; they are memories of a night with my family cast in the golden, dreamy light of the sunset. They are a reminder that sometimes, the best memories are the ones we capture spontaneously. These moments with family and friends, enjoying simple summer pleasures like an ice cream at Rainbow Cone, are fleeting and precious, especially for families in the Chicago and surrounding suburbs. They remind us to capture these moments before our children grow up - before they fly away.

Capturing the perfect summer evening with just my iPhone 14.

A Special Invitation for Chicago and Naperville Families

If this story inspires you to capture your family in the beautiful aura of summer, I have some great news. I have an opening for a photo shoot during the week of July 22. Imagine creating beautiful memories with your loved ones, perhaps even enjoying a delicious Rainbow Cone as we embrace the magic of the golden hour together in Chicago.

Interested in making this summer unforgettable for your family? Let’s plan a family photo session that captures the essence of this beautiful season. You don’t need a special occasionβ€”just the desire to hold onto the moments that matter most to your family in the Chicago and Naperville areas before they fly away.

For more details or to book your session or even just have a free consultation go here. Let’s make the most of this summer, one beautiful photo at a time, whether you're from Chicago, Naperville, or the surrounding communities.

Looking forward to capturing your moments, Emily

Framing Balance: My Lens on Productivity and Self-Care in Chicago

Rediscovering Balance: A Photographer's Urban Retreat

As a professional photographer and business owner, I often find myself caught in the whirlwind of daily tasks, client meetings, and endless to-do lists. This past weekend, I decided to break free from this routine and embark on a self-imposed business retreat at the Viceroy in Downtown Chicago. What transpired was a blend of self-care and productivity that I'm excited to share with you.

Capturing Serenity in the City

Choosing the Viceroy as my sanctuary was deliberate. The design and atmosphere provided a backdrop for both retreat and creative planning. These two days and nights allowed me to not only catch up on work but also strategize for the without the usual interruptions (like my dog scratching at the door, or kids asking for a ride).

Focusing on What Matters

Away from the constant buzz of notifications and the never-ending juggle of responsibilities, I found some clarity this weekend. This distraction-free environment allowed me to not only catch up on emails and blogging (see what we have here…) but also allowed me to strategize new creative projects. (Keep an eye out for a new photography course that's in development!)

The Art of Self-Portrait

As photographers, we're experts at capturing the essence of others, but how often do we we look internally? This self-retreat taught me the importance of self-focus. It's not vanity; it's necessary maintenance for my creative engines. Taking the time to reframe my perspective is crucial to sustaining my business.

Developing a New Perspective

Just as we sometimes need to change our angle to get the perfect shot, stepping back from my daily routine gave me a fresh view of my business and creative goals. This new perspective is already influencing my work, from how I approach client sessions to the personal projects I choose to pursue.

Exposure to Self-Care

To my fellow photographers and creatives feeling the burnout of constant creation, consider this a call of action to plan your own retreat. Whether it's a weekend staycation or a week-long sabbatical, taking time to recharge is crucial for maintaining the passion and creativity that fuels our work.

Bringing It All Into Focus

Returning home, I felt a renewed energy and connection with my craft. This experience has convinced me to make retreats a regular part of my business strategy, scheduling them quarterly to maintain this clarity and enthusiasm.

If you're curious about how to balance your creative pursuits with self-care, or if you'd like tips on planning your own retreat, let's connect. Drop a comment below or reach out through my contact page. Remember, taking care of yourself is important.

Ready to refocus,

Emily

The Story behind these Fateful Hydrangeas - Mother's Day Spring Mini Sessions May 4 and 5th

There is a story here behind these flowers. These are the  blooms that serendipitously brought me and my studio manager, Jordan, together last summer.

Picture this: three years back, I finally emerged from my cave of social distancing and wandered into Anthropologie – determined to buy something, anything, really.

My eyes landed on these stunning paper hydrangeas in the front windows , and bam! In my head, they had already transformed into my next photo shoot set.

Now, keep in mind, I was fresh in Naperville studio-less, I no longer had access to our Chicago studio space,  and let's not even discuss how thrilled Jim would be to stash more studio equipment in our already brimming basement. Despite the obvious lack of space, I left my number with the manager, asking for a call if they ever decided to part with the florals.

Fast forward two years…. Who calls? Jordan! I had forgotten all about the flowers but here she was announcing the great hydrangeas were ready to depart from the confines of Anthropologie’s basement!

By a twist of fate, I had just signed a lease on a studio just a stone's throw from their doorstep, and voilΓ , just like that the hydrangeas found their forever home. Little did we know, these weren't just any flowers; they were destined to be a catalyst for Jordan and I to meet!

So here we stand, these hydrangeas and I, ready to sprinkle some special floral magic on your Mother’s Day.

We're excited to invite you to an exclusive Studio 25 session this May 4th and 5th. For our Signature Studio 25  Sessions in Naperville. Trust me, it's going to be bloomin’ fantastic!

Spring Newsletter

Hi Friend,

What a whirlwind 2024 has already been over here at Studio 25 Naperville and Emily Cummings Photography! Our studio's been busy with events from the glitzy Mardi Gras Supper Club Experience to a number of studio rentals that included a jewelry pop-up, to yoga classes, to a test shoot for our upcoming prom prep experience.

Fresh off a stunning photo shoot in White Sands National Park, New Mexico, with the National Association of Portrait and Children's Photographers (NAPCP), the travel bug bit me and I have been so excited to plan the next big adventure. But the minute I sat down to plan for my family of differing tastes - the overwhelm became real. Enter my new BFF: Chat GPT.  I decided to use Chat GPT to create an epic travel itinerary for an upcoming trip to San Francisco. I'm super psyched as it even helped me figure out the closest cable car to our hotel, gave suggestions of where to eat and where we need reservations even which side of the boat to sit on the ferry when we go to Alcatraz!  This trip's shaping up to be one for the books. Sneak a peek at our planning magic on the blog – and stay tuned for part 2 on how it all went.

Studio 25 Naperville's spring line-up is about to bloom (see how I did that?)! We have created Signature Studio 25 Sessions, featuring a Mother's Day setup straight from the windows of Anthropologie window to our studio, all thanks to our very talented, Jordan Emmons. Mark your calendars for May 4 and 5 – it's going to be beautiful. Plus, we've also added First Communion Sessions and Simply You sessions that you just won't want to miss.

Warmly,

Emily

With the new year well under way, we know many businesses are organizing their websites and branding to put their best foot forward. We have been lucky enough to photograph local real estate agents, local web designers, and create lifestyle product photographs for local boutiques. We love to help businesses tell their story and connect with their best clients. We promise to make it fun. We are also taking products along with us on our travel this summer and have a few openings when we head to London and Paris. Email me if you have interest in finding out more

We also know life is not all work with no play. We love celebrating families and the little moments that make lasting memories. This spring we will be offering sessions for Mother's Day and First Communion, as well as getting-ready Prom Party for the special teens in your life. Keep an eye out for more details - we can't wait to be a part of these special moments.

Let’s Plan a Family Trip to San Francisco Little Help from the AI- VentureGuide! -Pt 1

As much as I love to travel, planning trips in today’s day and age can feel too overwhelming- there is an over-saturation of experiences from others, dozens of articles titled β€œthe best of…”, and scouring every corner of the internet is nothing short of daunting.

So, I thought, "Why not jump on the bandwagon and see if it can tackle the task of planning our family trip?"

I provided Chat GPT with some important details about our little crewβ€”me, a luxury lodging enthusiast with a penchant for photographic accommodations, my husband, a wine aficionado, and my two youngest adventurers, aged 10 and 14. With one simple click, we set off on a digital quest to map out our spring break journey from San Francisco to Pasadena. This part of my blog post will tackle the San Francisco portion of our journey.

The Lodging

Fairmont Hotel San Francisco

Our lodging choices were, naturally, dictated by aesthetics and my unapologetic hotel snobberyβ€”a trait finely honed during my consulting days with Accenture. I did not use AI for this….just good ol’ Google and the Amex Fine Hotels and Resorts. I love using our trusty Amex card, tapping into the Fine Hotels and Resorts program which comes with some pretty sweet perks: early check-in, late check-out, upgrades when available, a $100 resort credit, and complimentary breakfast for two.

The Fairmont in San Francisco was number one for me, and not just for its stunning visuals. I mean, Le Labo products? Yes, please. They'll have to peel me away from my Rose 31 scented sanctuary to kickstart our daily adventures.

This trip promises a bit of everything. AI, our digital concierge, not only mapped out our trip but sprinkled in some local wisdom by highlighting which attractions came with cable car adventuresβ€”a quintessential San Francisco treat. It didn't stop there, though. Knowing our craving for settings that boast "great ambiance," it pinpointed dining spots that promise to be more than just a meal, all conveniently located near our planned stops. And with a gentle nudge it reminded me which adventures required a reservation in advance.

So here we are, on the cusp of our spring break, guided by AI, through the scenic vistas of San Francisco to the charming streets of Paso Robles ending in Pasadena. With the itinerary below, we're ready to dive into a mix of city exploration, lots of food, and, of course, those inevitable moments of relaxation bathed in the scent of Le Labo Rose 31.

If anyone has been to San Francisco and has any suggestions to add or remove - I am all ears!

Let the Adventures Begin

DAY 1: ARRIVAL

Arrive 3:15 PM SFO - we plan to just Uber it to the Fairmont Hotel.

(Note about the rental car to drive down the coast…..we don’t seem to need a rental car to travel around San Fran and I also did not want to pay exorbitant parking fees to keep the car overnight so we will pick up a rental car at our hotel later in our stay. )

Stay: Fairmont Hotel, San Francisco

I told Chat GPT that we were staying at the Fairmont and would probably be tired after our our flight so we wanted to stick close to the hotel. I explained that this had to be nice but have foods to accommodate a picky 10 year old. I also requested beautiful ambience. This is what it came up with…

Dinner: at the Tonga Room & Hurricane Bar -which is right i our hotel! Chat GPT says we will have an unforgettable dining experience with unique tropical ambiance. Oh and since we booked through the Fine Hotels and Resorts we received a $100 experience credit from Amex can help cover the cost or at least buy Jim and I a few umbrella drinks!

DAY 2: San Francisco Exploration

Through the Fine Hotel and Resorts Program we receive 2 breakfasts free - so while we let Jim and my 14 year old sleep in - my little guy and I might sneak down for a quick hotel breakfast.

Breakfast: CafΓ© de la Presse

ChatGPT suggested that this was a great spot for a Parisian-style breakfast. Love a good Parisian Cafe.

Morning visit to the Exploratorium for hands-on science and art exhibits. I also suggested to Chat GPT that we would love to experience taking the Cable Cars and that we didn’t mind doing some walking.

Option to take a cable car from Fairmont to Exploratorium. ChatGPT suggested that one of the most scenic routes involves taking a cable car from the stop near the Fairmont Hotel down to the end of the line at Powell and Market Street. From there, you can either enjoy a leisurely walk to the Embarcadero and along to the Exploratorium (about 25 minutes)

After the Exploratorium we would be up for a late lunch. Remembering my crew and our culinary preferences it recommended that we walk from Exploratorium to the Ferry Building (10 min walk).

Lunch: Ferry Building Marketplace for a variety of local eats and artisanal shops.

Afternoon Activity: Shopping at Union Square. Having a 14 year daughter I suggested that ChatGPT throw some shopping options into the itinerary. Union Square was the suggestion offering a range of stores from high-end boutiques to popular retail chains. I also found out I can get my Le Labo perfume refilled at the Le Labo in San Francisco only 6 minutes from the Fairmont. Bonus!

Dinner: The Waterbar San Francisco - need reservation for this one…

Another ambiance suggestion by ChatGPT that looks to accomplish all of our culinary and ambiance needs!

Day 3 - More San Francisco Exploration

2 Free hotel breakfasts from Fine Resorts and Hotels but we may grab a quick bite with the ChatGPT suggestion….

Breakfast: Mama’s on Washington Square for a classic San Francisco breakfast experience.

Morning Adventure: Alcatraz Island tour Here are some tips from ChatGPT….remember to book tickets in advance. Oh and since I am a photographer it suggested that we sit/stand on the .eft side of the boat for best views - get there 30 min early so that we have that choice!

Back to hotel to rest up.

Late Afternoon: Golden Gate Fortune Cookie Factory in Chinatown - I have a ten year old that loves Chicago Chinatown and a husband that loves soup dumplings so I knew a visit to San Francisco’s Chinatown. ChatGPT recommended the Fortune Cookie Factory as well at dinner Bund Shanghai for soup dumplings. Only a 2 minute walk!

Day 4 - Friday - The Redwoods- Muir Woods

This is our last day in San Francisco. We were able to find a rental car company right in our hotel. I am happy to pay a little more for the convenience of not having to travel back to the airport to find a car. I had told ChatGPT that I had a 4th grader and wanted to take advantage of the National Parks program so it suggested a visit Muir Woods to see the Redwoods.

We plan to take advantage of the free hotel breakfasts to save time.

We will depart early for Muir Woods and njoy the redwoods and nature trails. It suggested we reserve parking in advance because we have a 4th grader print out a parks pass.

Lunch: Stop in Sausalito for lunch with a view of the San Francisco Bay.

We are going to try the The Trident which will have great views of San Francisco. Then we will stop by Cavallo Point for family pictures. I am going to bring a tripod along to see if I can figure out how to grab some self-portraits of the family. Wish me luck on this one!

And we’re out…..Drive to Paso Robles: Begin your journey to Paso Robles in the early afternoon.

A Guide to Dressing for Your Family Photo Shoot (Naperville and Chicago)

The holiday season will be upon us before we know it, and it's the perfect time to capture some magical moments with your little ones. Whether you're planning a holiday-themed photo shoot in Naperville or the bustling streets of Chicago, choosing the right outfits can make a world of difference. I am here to guide you through dressing your children for a holiday photo shoot that will result in cherished memories and timeless photographs.

01. Comfort is Key

When dressing your children for a holiday photo shoot, prioritize comfort. Uncomfortable kids can lead to uncooperative behavior, which doesn't make it easy for great photos. Opt for soft, breathable fabrics that won't irritate your child's skin during the shoot. Here are a few great local options for comfortable kids holiday oufits in both Naperville and Chicago: Tinker Children’s Boutique Tinker Children’s Boutique in downtown Naperville or Chicago’s very own Monica and Andy. If you really want to get comfortable check out the adorable pajamas from Illinois’ very own Lalalogan.

02. THEME AND LOCATION

Think about the theme of your photo shoot when determining outfits. Are you going for a classic holiday look or something more unique?

Consider the location. If you're shooting in a prairie field in Naperville, you might want to blend in with the picturesque field setting. In downtown Chicago, you can experiment with more urban and trendy styles.

03. Coordinated Color Schemes

Coordinating your children's outfits can create a visually pleasing and harmonious look. Pick a color palette that suits the holiday season. Reds, greens, blues, and metallics often work well for holiday photography color schemes.

04. Layers and Accessories

Layers can add depth and texture to photos. Consider adding cardigans, scarves, or cute vests.

Don't forget about accessories like hats, headbands, or bows. They can add a festive touch to your child's ensemble.

05. Personality and individuality

Let your child's personality shine through in their outfit choices. Whether they're a budding fashionista or a sports enthusiast, incorporate elements that reflect their interests.

06. Keep It Timeless:

While it's tempting to go for trendy styles, timeless outfits can ensure your photos remain relevant for years to come.

Dressing your children for a holiday photo shoot can be a delightful experience. By prioritizing comfort, considering the theme and location, coordinating colors, adding layers and accessories, showcasing personality, and opting for timeless styles, you'll create memorable photographs that will be treasured for years.

We offer access to an online styling service to make this process as simple as possible. Interested in learning more about working with us in Naperville, Chicago, and the surrounding suburbs? Click on the button below.

Unveiling Your True Beauty: Debunking the "Not Photogenic" Myth

In today's social media-driven world, where everyone is a photographer, the concept of being photogenic has taken on new significance. We've all heard it, and perhaps even said it ourselves: "I'm not photogenic" or "I look terrible in photos." These self-doubts often lead to anxiety and discomfort whenever a camera is present.

But here's a truth that has emerged from years of capturing beautiful moments: it's NOT true!

Discovering the Magic in Family Photos

As a photographer, one of my deepest passions is family photography. It's not just about capturing images; it's about freezing moments of genuine love and connection. When families come together in front of the camera, something magical transpires.

The stiffness and awkwardness that can often plague photoshoots vanish into the background, making way for authentic emotions and the pure, unadulterated love that binds families together.

The Beauty of Togetherness

In these precious moments, we see the true beauty that emerges when we are surrounded by those we cherish the most. It's not about perfect angles or flawless poses; it's about celebrating your unique bonds and personalities.

So, the next time you find yourself stepping in front of a camera, remember this: You are photogenic, and you are beautiful just as you are. The key to a successful photoshoot isn't striving for perfection but embracing the love that surrounds you and allowing it to shine through in every frame.

The Magic of Candid Moments

While posed family portraits certainly have their charm, there's something undeniably magical about candid moments captured on camera. These unscripted glimpses into your family's life can reveal genuine emotions, interactions, and connections that resonate far more deeply than any posed photograph.

Imagine this scenario: It's a lazy Sunday morning, and your family is gathered in the kitchen, each member engrossed in their own activity. The aroma of pancakes fills the air as the sunlight streams through the window. In this simple yet beautiful moment, you might not think to grab the camera, but it's precisely moments like these that hold the essence of your family's story.

Candid moments often arise when you least expect them. It could be a spontaneous tickle fight, a shared joke, or a stolen glance between family members. These are the moments that reflect your family's true dynamics and the love that binds you together.

Capturing these candid moments requires a skilled photographer who knows how to blend into the background, allowing your family to relax and be themselves. It's during these unguarded moments that authentic emotions and connections shine through, resulting in photographs that tell a genuine and heartwarming story.

So, the next time you're tempted to orchestrate the perfect family portrait, consider embracing the beauty of candid photography. These unfiltered, unposed moments are the ones that will transport you back in time, evoking laughter, tears, and the warmth of family bonds.

Allow your photographer to document your family's unique narrative as it naturally unfolds. Whether it's a playful pillow fight, a quiet conversation, or a shared adventure, these candid moments will become treasured memories that you'll cherish for years to come.

Remember, the beauty of authenticity lies in the unexpected, the imperfect, and the uniquely "you." Let your family's story be told through the magic of candid moments.

A Magical Inaugural Photo Shoot: Charming Little Guy and Some Fluffy Companions

Bursting with excitement over here! Last Friday, our studio was abuzz with anticipation as we embarked on an unforgettable inaugural photo shoot. Everything about it was simply perfect, and we couldn't be happier with the magical moments we captured. The lighting in our new space is nothing short of incredible, and it set the stage for an enchanting experience.

Our charming little guy, accompanied by his fluffy little companions (yes, you read that right - chicks AND ducklings!), stole our hearts from the moment they stepped into the studio. The innocence and wonder in his eyes, coupled with the adorable quirkiness of the fluffy buddies, made for an endearing and delightful combination.

As we carefully posed and snapped each shot, we couldn't help but marvel at the joy and pure happiness that radiated from the images. The magic of capturing these fleeting moments is why we are so passionate about photography. Moments like these create lasting memories, and we are honored to be a part of preserving them.

Our new studio space provided the perfect backdrop for this heartwarming session. The soft hues and cozy atmosphere added an extra touch of warmth and intimacy to the photographs. We knew this was the start of something special and heartwarming.

As we wrapped up the shoot, we couldn't help but feel grateful for the opportunity to capture these cherished moments. The joy of working in our new studio, combined with the incredible energy of this little guy and his adorable companions, left us with hearts full of happiness.

We're thrilled to embark on this new chapter of our photography journey, and we can't wait to create more magical memories with our clients. Each session brings its unique charm and special moments, and we are grateful for every opportunity to freeze time and capture the beauty of life's little wonders.

Thank you to our lovely clients and fluffy companions for making our inaugural shoot so memorable and heartwarming. Your smiles and laughter are what fuels our passion for photography, and we're eager to embark on many more joyous adventures together.

Until next time, let the magic of photography continue to unfold, preserving the essence of love, laughter, and adorable moments forever.

A little rain can't stop us.... Chicago Family City Photoshoot

I miss everything about Chicago, except January and February - Gary Cole

A sunny day in the Windy City is glorious to behold! You can imagine how I felt waking up to my weather app alerting me to a downpour during my upcoming photo shoot in downtown Chicago. Hair and makeup was already on their way to my client and outfits for our location were planned. Rescheduling was not in the cards (especially with a family of 3 boys involved in sports and activities). This photo shoot was happening!

I know the streets of Chicago well and we were able to navigate to various awnings and overhangs all along Michigan Avenue. The archways at 4th Presbyterian provide a beautiful backdrop, rain or shine. The Wrigley Building is also a great spot to keep dry and get a nice hot cup of Ghiradelli hot chocolate. Our black umbrellas were key props that day. Despite the inclement weather we ended up with a gorgeous photo shoot where the lights were extra sparkly and the hot chocolate was extra tasty.

Award Winning Chicago Family Photographer

We were so please to be invited back to the NAPCP top 100 artists this July. For the second year in a row I was chosen as a top 100 artist with the NAPCP Print Competition and Gallery Event. We packed up the family and headed down Atlanta to celebrate and support fellow visual artists.

The NAPCP Inspired Print Competition & Gallery Event is the only competition of its kind. Artists from around the globe submit their work each year to this exclusive competition. The Top 100 images advance on to be displayed in a beautiful gallery event at NAPCP headquarters (Park Studios) in Atlanta, GA where there is LIVE judging. 9 winners are then announced in person and are given awards in an intimate setting where we celebrate them as artists. I met so many inspiring artists and can’t wait to be back next year.

Chicago Family Photo Shoot Olive Park | Award Winning Family Portrait Photographer in Chicago

I am so excited to share a Chicago family photography shoot just north of Navy Pier in Oliver Park. We chose a Monday evening when this beautiful Chicago park was not terribly crowded. We explored the park and got some amazing Chicago skyline family pictures just as the sun was setting. We finished our family photo shoot at Ohio Street Beach. I always love this skyline view of Chicago so up close. Our stylist, Andrea from Styled by Golden Iris, did an amazing job picking out the perfect selection of outfits for a unique family photo shoot in Chicago.

Newborn Photo Shoot In LaGrange IL

This family with a dad from Scotland had many Scottish influences in their home which was so much fun to incorporate in our LaGrange newborn photo shoot. The older sister clearly enjoyed holding and doting on her baby brother. The best part about choosing an in hope experience especially with small children is that the kids are comfortable in their space and that comes through in the images. We also don’t have to contend with the unpredictable Chicago weather which is always a plus with a family portrait session that includes a newborn.

A Downtown Chicago Adventure

I was so happy when this Naperville family wanted to explore my old haunts on the Gold Coast of Chicago. Many have asked me about this favorite location. It is actually Aster Hall food court in the heart of Michigan Avenue. When I am not shooting here I love to enjoy a good Small Cheval burger while watching the city unfold below.

Because it is a food court we had to shoot early so that we would not be in anyone’s way, we also were able to walk down Michigan ave towards the Wrigley Building without the weekend crowds. It also allowed us to get a variety of locations in Chicago.

Our stylist worked hard to help plan the perfect outfits for our shoot and our hair and makeup artists were onsite early to help make this photo shoot a success. It was so much fun to see how this family portrait session came together.
