My Journey into Full-Time Photography and Entrepreneurship

Four years ago, COVID-19 became the unexpected catalyst for a life-changing decision. Like many others, the pandemic forced us to reevaluate our priorities and lifestyle. Up until then, I had been juggling a full-time tech job at a school with a part-time photography business that consumed my evenings and weekends. The pace was relentless, and I found myself missing precious time with my family.

When the world slowed down, we saw an opportunity for change. With a mix of excitement and trepidation, my family and I packed our bags and moved to the suburbs of Naperville. But this wasn't just a change of scenery—it was the beginning of a whole new chapter in my professional life. I decided to take a leap of faith, leaving behind the security of my full-time job to pour all my energy into my true passion: photography.

This move wasn't just about changing careers; it was about changing our lives. It was a chance to build a business that not only fulfilled me professionally but also allowed me to be present for the moments that matter most with my family.

The Rocky Road to Success

Has it been easy? Not by a long shot. There are still nights when I wake up in a panic, my mind racing with all the responsibilities and challenges that come with running your own business. But I've noticed something encouraging: those moments of doubt are becoming fewer and farther between. With each passing day, I'm learning more about what it takes to build and maintain a sustainable business.

I didn't step into this world with an MBA tucked under my arm. I didn't major in Business or Communications in college. I don't come from a family of entrepreneurs who could show me the ropes. What I did have was a passion for photography that took hold 15 years ago and refused to let go.

The Power of Passion and Persistence

With the help of the internet and a determination to learn and grow, I've managed to turn that passion into a thriving business. Sure, I stumble sometimes. But each mistake is a lesson, each setback an opportunity to refine my approach. I pick myself up, dust myself off, and keep moving forward.

My parents used to shake their heads at my constant stream of ideas. I drove them nuts with all the possibilities I'd envision. Little did we know that this very trait—this ability to see potential and opportunities where others might not—would serve me so well in my role as an entrepreneur.

Expanding Horizons

A year into our move, we took another big step: adding a studio space and starting a new business. It was a risk, but one that has paid off in ways I couldn't have imagined.

The Joys of Entrepreneurship

What do I love most about this path I've chosen? It's not just about the flexibility or freedom, though those are certainly perks. The true joy lies in the constant state of growth and connection I find myself in every day.

  1. Endless Learning: Every day brings new challenges and opportunities to learn. Whether it's mastering a new photography technique, navigating the intricacies of business management, or exploring innovative marketing strategies, I'm in a constant state of growth. This perpetual student mindset keeps me energized and excited about my work.

  2. Amazing Connections: One of the most rewarding aspects of my journey has been the incredible people I've met along the way. From clients who trust me to capture their most precious moments, to fellow entrepreneurs who inspire me with their creativity and drive, to mentors who generously share their wisdom – each interaction enriches my life and my work.

  3. Creative Freedom: As an entrepreneur, I have the freedom to pursue projects that truly excite me. I can experiment with new ideas, collaborate with other creatives, and push the boundaries of my art without needing approval from higher-ups.

  4. Impactful Work: There's something profoundly satisfying about knowing that my work directly impacts people's lives. Whether I'm capturing a family's love, a newborn's first days, or the story behind a new business, I'm creating tangible memories.

This path keeps me on my toes, constantly evolving, and deeply connected to a community of amazing individuals. It's challenging, yes, but it's also incredibly rewarding. Every day, I'm reminded of why I took this leap, and I'm grateful for the opportunity to grow, learn, and create in ways I never could have imagined in my previous career.

A Lesson for the Next Generation

This path isn't for everyone, and that's okay. But I'm proud of myself for taking the plunge. More than that, I'm grateful for the example I'm setting for my daughter and son. I'm showing them what it means to be a strong woman and mom—someone who pursues her passions, faces challenges head-on, and still makes time for the people and things that matter most.

Looking Ahead

As I reflect on these past four years, I'm filled with gratitude and excitement for what's to come. Yes, there have been challenges, but the rewards—both personal and professional—have been immeasurable.

To anyone out there standing on the edge of their own leap of faith, I say: go for it! Chase your dreams. Embrace the journey. Learn from your mistakes and celebrate your successes, no matter how small.

Here's to the next four years and beyond. May they be filled with growth, learning, and the joy that comes from doing what you love.

P.S. A big thank you to Hector from Flytographer for the gorgeous images from our adventure in London.
