Summer Family Photo Sessions in Naperville: Everything You Need to Know (2026)

If you've been thinking about family photos and keep telling yourself you'll get to it... summer is genuinely the time.

Not because I'm trying to fill my calendar (though I won't pretend spots don't go fast). But because summer in Naperville is actually one of the most beautiful seasons to photograph families outdoors. The light is warm and golden. The locations are lush and green. And there's an ease to being outside in good weather that changes how people show up in photos in a way that's really hard to manufacture any other time of year.

I'm Emily, and I've been photographing families in Naperville through Ten Little Bluebirds Photography for years. Here's everything you actually need to know about booking a summer family session... from scheduling around the best light to what to put on your kids to what happens if it decides to rain.

Why Summer Is One of the Best Seasons for Family Photos in Naperville

Summer gets overlooked as a photography season because people assume the harsh midday sun means bad photos. And they're right about midday. But morning and evening light in summer? That's a completely different story.

Summer also means kids are out of school, which means more scheduling flexibility. No rushing from practice to homework to bed. You can actually plan around the best light without working around a school night.

And there's something about the energy of summer... kids being themselves, parents actually relaxed, everyone in lighter clothes and lighter moods... that shows up beautifully in outdoor photos. These are the sessions families come back to me years later and say were their favorites.

The Best Time to Schedule: Golden Hour, Explained

Here's the one piece of advice that will make the biggest difference in your photos.

Book for golden hour.

Golden hour is the window before sunset when the light turns warm, soft, and flattering from every direction. In Naperville in summer, June evenings are especially long and gorgeous. July and August give you slightly shorter windows but the light is just as beautiful.

Why it matters: Midday summer light is harsh and creates unflattering shadows, especially on faces. Golden hour light wraps around everyone softly and makes every image look warmer and more intentional. The difference is significant and visible.

Morning sessions: Early morning light is also beautiful and has the added bonus of cooler temperatures and fewer people at outdoor locations. For families with very young kids who are early risers, a morning session can be incredible. The tradeoff is getting everyone up and out the door while the light is still good.

My recommendation: We talk through what works best for your specific family on your prep call. Age of your kids, their temperament, your family's natural rhythm... all of that factors in. There's no one-size-fits-all answer and I'd rather get it right for you than give you a blanket suggestion.

What to Wear for Summer Family Sessions

Summer outfits have a lot going for them. Lighter fabrics, brighter colors, more relaxed silhouettes. Here's how to make them work for photos.

Fabrics: Lightweight and breathable. Linen, cotton, soft jersey. You're going to be outside in summer heat and nobody photographs well when they're overheated and uncomfortable. Avoid anything stiff, heavy, or restrictive.

Colors that work beautifully outdoors in summer: Soft whites and creams. Sage green. Dusty blue. Warm terracotta. Blush. Soft yellow. These colors all work beautifully against the lush green backgrounds of a Naperville summer session. Coordinate across your family without matching exactly... pick a palette of two or three colors and let everyone work within it in their own way.

What to avoid: Neon and very bright colors compete with the natural summer color around you. Very dark colors absorb heat. Busy patterns distract from faces. And please, comfortable shoes. We will be walking.

For kids specifically: Dress them in something soft and comfortable that they've worn before. Stiff dress shoes and scratchy collars become the entire session if a child is uncomfortable. Sandals are fine. Sneakers are fine. Whatever they'll actually wear happily.

How to Prep Kids for a Summer Session

Summer adds a few logistics that non-summer sessions don't have.

Sunscreen: Apply before you leave home, not when you arrive. Sunscreen that hasn't fully absorbed can create a white cast in photos. Give it plenty of time to sink in before we start shooting.

Bug spray: If we're shooting near water or wooded areas (and Naperville has beautiful both), a light bug spray is worth it. Kids who are swatting at bugs are not kids who are looking at the camera.

Water: Bring it for everyone. Staying hydrated keeps everyone comfortable and comfortable people photograph better. Simple as that.

Snacks: Non-negotiable. Even if they just ate. Bring something small they love for a mid-session energy reset. I've revived many a toddler with a well-timed goldfish cracker.

Expectations: Keep it casual. "We're going to the park to take some fun photos" is enough. No big build-up, no warnings about behavior. Just a normal fun outing that happens to involve a camera.

The Best Summer Locations in Naperville for Family Sessions

Naperville has some genuinely incredible outdoor locations for summer family photography. Here are my favorites.

The Naperville Riverwalk: The classic for a reason. The 1.75-mile brick path along the DuPage River gives us enormous variety in a single location. Covered bridges, open green spaces, water views, shade from mature trees. For families with young kids who need to keep moving, the Riverwalk is perfect.

Knoch Knolls Park: My personal favorite for a woodsy, private feel. Wooded trails, a river, open meadows, and that genuine "we're in nature" quality even though you're still very much in Naperville. The light through the trees here in the evening is stunning.

Downtown Naperville: Beautiful brick streets, warm architecture, a lively backdrop that gives photos an editorial feel. Perfect for families who want something a little more urban and modern. Also lovely for milestone sessions and older kids or teens who'd rather not pose in a field.

Centennial Park: Open green spaces, a beautiful pond, and that wide-sky feeling that gives photos room to breathe. Gorgeous for families who want sweeping wide shots alongside the close-up portraits.

Hidden gems: I have a few locations I reserve for repeat clients who want something more unexpected. We'll talk through options on your prep call and find the right fit for your family's vibe.

What Happens If It Rains?

Illinois summer weather is what it is. We all know this.

If the weather doesn't cooperate, we reschedule. No stress, no fees, no drama. I'd rather reschedule than rush through a session in conditions that aren't going to give us the photos you're hoping for.

I keep an eye on the forecast as your session date approaches and will reach out if we need to make a call. We'll find a new date that works and pick up exactly where we planned.

What about light rain? Occasionally a light drizzle can actually create beautiful atmospheric photos if everyone's game for it. We'll make the call together based on conditions and how your family feels about it.

How Far in Advance to Book

This is the one I want you to actually pay attention to.

Summer fills up. Every year I have families reach out later in the summer wanting sessions and the availability is limited. The families who get the best selection of dates and locations are the ones who book early.

If you're reading this and thinking "I should probably do summer photos this year"... now is the time to reach out. Not because I'm pushing you. Because you'll be genuinely glad you didn't wait.

What's Included in a Ten Little Bluebirds Summer Session

Every Ten Little Bluebirds family session includes a personalized prep call before we shoot so I know your family before I ever pick up a camera. We confirm your location, talk through outfits, and I answer every question you have so you walk in feeling ready.

The session itself is fully directed. I handle every moment so nobody's standing around not knowing what to do. We get the posed portraits alongside the candid in-between moments that are almost always the images families love most.

After your session you'll view and order your images at your ordering appointment, where you'll choose the images and products that feel right for your family.

Book Your Summer Session Before Spots Are Gone

Summer in Naperville is short and beautiful and so is the booking window for getting the session you actually want.

Your kids at this exact age, this exact summer... this is the one.
