The Best Outdoor Family Photo Locations in Naperville, Illinois (2026)
I've photographed families all over Naperville and the western suburbs for years now. And one of the questions I get asked more than almost anything else is: "Where should we do our session?"
It's a great question. And honestly? Naperville makes it a little tricky to answer... not because there aren't good options, but because there are SO many good options.
So here's my honest rundown of the best outdoor family photo locations in Naperville, Illinois. What makes each one special, what time of day works best, and who I'd recommend each spot for. I'll also tell you about a few hidden gems I save for repeat clients who want something a little different.
And just so you know... we always talk through location during your prep call. Choosing the right spot for your family, your vibe, and the time of year is part of what makes the session feel like yours.
Why Naperville Is One of the Best Places in the Western Suburbs for Outdoor Family Photos
Let me just say this clearly: Naperville is genuinely one of the most photogenic towns in the Chicago suburbs. I'm a little biased (it's home!) but I've shot in a lot of places and Naperville holds its own.
You've got the downtown area with its warm brick streets and charming architecture. The Riverwalk winding along the DuPage River with covered bridges and fountains. Nature preserves that feel like you're nowhere near a city. And everything is close together, which makes location scouting easy.
The light here in spring and early summer is also just... gorgeous. Golden and warm in the morning, soft and flattering in the late afternoon. Naperville outdoor family photos in May and June? That's my sweet spot.
Location 1: The Naperville Riverwalk
Best for: Families who want variety in one location, iconic Naperville backdrops, kids who need to keep moving
Address: 400 S Eagle St, Naperville, IL 60540
There's a reason the Riverwalk is called the "Crown Jewel of Naperville." The 1.75-mile brick-paved path along the West Branch of the DuPage River gives us SO much to work with in a single session. Covered bridges. The Dandelion Fountain. Open grassy areas. Shade from mature trees. Water views. Cozy little nooks along the path.
For families with younger kids especially, the Riverwalk is gold. There's always something to look at and explore, which means they're not just standing there waiting to be photographed. They're actually doing stuff... which is when the best photos happen anyway.
Best time: Early morning (before the lunch crowd) or the last two hours before sunset. The light through the trees along the river in late afternoon is genuinely something special.
Seasonal note: Spring is stunning here when the trees bloom. Fall is incredible with the color. Summer works great early morning. Winter is beautiful in its own quiet way with snow on the covered bridges.
Location 2: Centennial Park and the Surrounding Area
Best for: Families who want open space, room to run, and a relaxed feel
Address: 500 W Jackson Ave, Naperville, IL 60540
Centennial Park sits right next to the Riverwalk and Centennial Beach, so it's easy to combine with a Riverwalk session if we want variety. The park has sprawling green spaces, walking paths, a beautiful pond, and that open-sky feeling that gives photos a lot of breathing room.
For families with little ones who love to run (and let's be honest, that's most of them), the open fields here are ideal. We can get beautiful wide shots of the kids just being themselves, then pull everyone in for the closer family portraits near the water or along the tree lines.
Best time: Golden hour is incredible here because of the open sky. About 90 minutes before sunset, the light turns warm and soft and flattering from every direction.
Seasonal note: Spring through fall is best. Summer mornings work well before the heat kicks in.
Location 3: Downtown Naperville Streets and Architecture
Best for: Families who want a modern, editorial feel; lifestyle-forward portraits; teens who hate "nature poses"
Downtown Naperville has a warmth to it that surprises a lot of families when we shoot there. The brick sidewalks, the storefronts, the alleyways... it all gives photos a lively, vibrant energy that's different from the park feel. And for older kids and teens especially, being in a more "cool" location helps them relax and actually enjoy the session.
We'll often wander through the streets near Jefferson and Main, use doorways and brick walls as backdrops, and capture the family just strolling and talking and laughing like they actually do in real life.
(And yes, we're three doors from Gordon Ramsay's restaurant. I mention this mostly because people always want to know.)
Best time: Morning light hits the east-facing streets beautifully. Late afternoon gives a gorgeous warm glow on the brick.
Seasonal note: Year-round, honestly. Downtown has great character in every season.
Location 4: Knoch Knolls Park
Best for: Families who want a woodsy, private, nature-immersed feel
Address: 336 Knoch Knolls Rd, Naperville, IL 60565
This is one of my absolute favorites and it's a little less crowded than some of the downtown spots, which I love. Knoch Knolls has wooded trails, a beautiful river running through it, open meadows, and a genuine "we're in nature" feeling even though you're still very much in Naperville.
The trails are well-marked so nobody's wandering off and getting lost (kids will try). There are picnic areas, open spaces for the big wide shots, and gorgeous spots right along the water where the light filters through the trees in a way that makes me genuinely excited every single time.
For families who love the outdoors, for kids who need to move, for couples who want portraits that feel natural and easy... Knoch Knolls is often my first recommendation.
Best time: Late afternoon into golden hour. The way the light comes through the trees in that last hour before sunset is just stunning.
Seasonal note: Spring through fall. Summer mornings before it gets hot are beautiful here.
Location 5: Hidden Gems I Save for Repeat Clients
Okay, here's where I get a little selective. I have a few favorite spots I tend to reserve for families who've already done a session with me and want something a little more unexpected. The kinds of places where you're not going to run into four other photographers doing sessions on the same afternoon.
A couple of hints: there's a preserve in south Naperville with a historic red barn and walking paths along the DuPage River that is genuinely one of the most beautiful places I've ever shot. And there's a prairie preserve nearby that at sunset looks like something out of a movie... vast open sky, tall grasses, that warm golden glow everywhere.
If you've already done a session with Ten Little Bluebirds and you want something different for round two... just ask me. We'll find somewhere special.
Best Times of Year and Day for Outdoor Family Photos in Naperville
I get asked this constantly, so let me just put it all in one place.
Best seasons: Spring (late April through early June) and Fall (mid-September through October) are the sweet spots. The temperatures are comfortable, the light is gorgeous, and the color is incredible. Summer works well with the right timing. Winter sessions can be beautiful but you need to be okay with the cold and a backup plan if it snows.
Best time of day: The two hours after sunrise and the two hours before sunset. Photographers call it "golden hour" and the name is accurate. The light is warm, soft, and flattering from every direction. Midday light is harsh and creates unflattering shadows... so we avoid it.
Rainy day plan: We always have one. If the weather doesn't cooperate, we reschedule without stress. A session that's rushed or uncomfortable doesn't give us the photos we're going for.
How We Choose Your Location Together
Choosing the right outdoor family photo location in Naperville is actually part of what we do together during your prep call. I'll ask about your family's vibe, your kids' ages and energy levels, what kind of feel you want in your photos, and what season works for your schedule.
Then I'll recommend two or three options that I think are the best fit... and we'll pick one together. Sometimes clients have a location in mind already and that's great. Sometimes they have no idea and want me to just decide. Either way works perfectly.
The goal is always photos that feel like your family. Not like a stock photo. Yours.
